James and his brother John were the sons of Zebedee. They were Galilean fishermen. While they were mending their nets, Jesus called them to follow him. James, along with Peter and John, was one of the disciples closest to Jesus. He was present at the Transfiguration, asked for a special place in Jesus’ kingdom, and accompanied Jesus in Gethsemane.
